Carports are structures designed to protect your car from the elements of nature, elements which could damage your vehicle or make it difficult or uncomfortable to use.
They are not normally fully enclosed, but consist instead, of a frame structure, and a roof. The lack of siding may be seen as a problem, but it is really a solution for at least two reasons:
- It allows for cooling airflow in the summer, when being inside a fully enclosed metal building in the Texas heat can be a less than pleasant experience.
- It is less costly than a full scale enclosure.
That is not to say that carports can not be fully enclosed, because they can. Even after they are built, you can enclose them at a later date and use them as a full fledged garage or shop. That is part of the beauty of these simple structures.
Modular standard types of carports, can be purchased in a number of width sizes and are usually listed as:
- Single wide
- Double wide from 12′ to 24′ wide
- Triple wide from 26′ to 30′ wide
Carports of the modular standard type come in many lengths:
- Double wide from 21′ to 41′
- Triple wide from 21′ to 51′
If you need something longer, that can usually be done as well. The simple design makes increasing length a very simple mater.
